Count characters, words, and sentences instantly with this free social media character counter. As you type, it checks your text against the real limits of every major platform — X (Twitter), Instagram captions and bios, TikTok, YouTube titles, LinkedIn posts, and even Google's SEO title and meta description lengths — so you never get cut off mid-sentence again.
How it works
- Type or paste your text in the box above.
- Watch the live counts — characters, characters without spaces, words, and sentences.
- Check the platform bars: green means you fit, amber means you're close, red shows exactly how many characters you're over.
Platform character limits (2026)
Quick reference for the limits this tool tracks: X/Twitter posts allow 280 characters (free accounts), Instagram captions 2,200 and bios 150, TikTok captions 2,200, YouTube titles 100, and LinkedIn posts 3,000. For search, Google typically displays about 60 characters of a title tag and 160 characters of a meta description before truncating.
Frequently asked questions
Do emoji count as one character?
On most platforms an emoji counts as one visible character, and this tool counts them that way (emoji-safe counting). One exception: X/Twitter counts most emoji as two characters toward its 280 limit, so leave a little headroom if your post is emoji-heavy.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted directly in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or stored — you can even use the tool offline once the page is loaded.
What counts as a word or a sentence?
Words are any groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Sentences are counted by ending punctuation — periods, question marks, and exclamation marks.
Why does Google cut off my title or description?
Google truncates titles at roughly 60 characters and meta descriptions at roughly 160 (it actually measures pixels, so wide letters truncate sooner). Keep within those counts and your snippets will almost always display in full.
